Thomas Dolby

Thomas Dolby, a five-time Grammy winner, has been making electronic music for more than 30 years, most famously with the songs 'She Blinded Me with Science' and 'Hyperactive' which climbed to number 5 on the Billboard charts. He's also worked with diverse artists including Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, Joni Mitchell, Foreigner and Roger Waters. His company Beatnik, Inc. created the polyphonic ringtone software used in over 100 million mobile telephones.
Thomas has released a video on his blog which demonstrates how he puts together a tune using CamelSpace. (You may need to update your Windows Media or Quicktime players to view the video.)
What projects are you using CamelSpace on presently?
I'm using Camelspace extensively on my current tour and I also used it in a piece for Mission Impossible 3 with Tom Cruise.
What do you think of CamelSpace?
Camelspace is one of the first effects I reach for when I'm looking to trip a sound out. It's very easy to use and the sequenced gating is just a huge timesaver.
Can you give us any tips on using CamelSpace?
In Logic Pro, I put vocals through a very long reverb of, say, 20 seconds (e.g. Space Designer on a 'Cathedral' setting). Bounce the sound to a stereo waveform and slide it forward in the sequence by the length of the reverb. Reverse the waveform. Now add CamelSpace to the waveform, using a rhythmic pad setting in the tempo of the song. You get a fantastic 'backwards reverb' effect, but with a pulse to it.
I use it for backing vocal samples on 'Europa And The Pirate Twins' when I play it live. It'll be featured on my new live CD and DVD, 'The Sole Inhabitant'.
